When Should I Replace My Water Heater?
Aug 30, 2024

If you ever feel like you’re taken for granted, just think about the water heater. This ubiquitous and humble appliance provides us the hot water we need for proper handwashing, dishwashing, shower, and more – yet most property owners don’t give it a second thought.

Neglecting your water heater is self-defeating. While properly installed and maintained water heaters can last for up to 20 years, an unkempt unit can break down in just a few years.

In this brief article brought to you by Acknowledge Plumbing, we go over some reasons why it might be time for a water heater replacement. If you’d rather consult with a trained plumber directly, then call Acknowledge Plumbing to get started.

How long does a water heater last?

Water heaters are built to last, but they’re not forever. On average, a traditional tank water heater has a lifespan of about 8 to 12 years while tankless water heaters can last up to 20 years. However, these numbers can vary based on factors like the quality of the unit, water quality in your area, and how well the heater has been maintained.

Regular maintenance can maximize the life of your water heater, but even the best-maintained units will eventually need to be replaced. Knowing the signs of a failing water heater can help you plan for a replacement before it’s too late.

Sign 1: Age of the water heater

The age of your water heater is one of the most reliable indicators of when it’s time for a replacement. If your water heater is approaching or exceeding its expected lifespan, it’s a good idea to start considering a new unit – even if it’s still functioning. Older units are more prone to breakdowns and are less efficient, meaning higher energy bills and more potential headaches down the road.

Sign 2: Inconsistent water temperature

If you notice that your hot water isn’t as hot as it used to be, or if it’s going between hot and cold, then it’s time to investigate. This could be due to sediment buildup in the tank, which reduces the efficiency of the heating elements. While flushing the tank can help, persistent problems might mean it’s time for a replacement.

Sign 3: Rusty water

If you’re seeing rusty water when you turn on the hot tap, it’s a sign that your water heater is corroding from the inside. This is especially concerning if the rust is coming from a tank-style water heater. Once a tank starts to rust, it’s only a matter of time before it begins to leak. Unfortunately, a water leak repair is not going to do much for a rusted water heater tank – replacement is the viable option.

Sign 4: Leaks around the unit

Small leaks can quickly turn into larger ones, leading to significant water damage. While not all leaks mean you need to replace the entire water heater (some can be fixed by tightening connections or replacing faulty valves), a leaking tank usually means that the unit is on its last legs and needs to be replaced.

If you want a peace of mind, then schedule a professional leak detection. All leaks are insidious and should NOT be ignored. The plumbers at Acknowledge Plumbing use sophisticated devices and technology to pinpoint water heaters at their root.
