What’s a sump pump, and how does it work?

Unironically, a sump pump is a pump that sits in a pit called a sump. This installation is usually located in the lowest part of your basement or crawl space where water will naturally gather. When water levels in the pit reach a certain height, the sump pump automatically kicks in to pump the water out and away from your home’s foundation.

Most sump pumps run on electricity, and there are two main types: submersible and pedestal. Submersible pumps sit directly in the sump pit, making them quieter and less visible, while the louder alternative pedestal pumps sit above the pit with just a hose reaching down. Both types can be effective, but they work best when tailored to your specific needs.

Who actually needs a sump pump?

If you’re on the fence about getting a sump pump, here are a few scenarios where having one can be a lifesaver:

  • If your home is in a region that’s prone to heavy rains, hurricanes, or has a high water table. Look at your area’s flood maps or talk to your neighbors about water issues. If they’ve had flooding problems or rely on sump pumps, there’s a good chance you could benefit from one too.
  • If your basement often feels damp, musty, or you notice small puddles forming, a sump pump could be the answer.
  • If your home’s built on a sloped lot. When it rains, water naturally flows downhill and can accumulate around your foundation.
  • If you’ve had flooding issues in the past, even minor ones, then a sump pump can offer a peace of mind.

When a sump pump may not be necessary

On the flip side, there are plenty of situations where a sump pump might not be essential. Here are a few scenarios where you could probably skip it:

  • You live in an area with low rainfall or a low water table.
  • Your basement stays dry year-round.
  • Your home is well above the water table on flat, solid ground.

If you’re still scratching your head, you are welcomed to call Acknowledge Plumbing to have a plumber come out and investigate your property.
