Water is considered "hard" when it contains a high concentration of minerals like calcium and magnesium. While hard water isn’t harmful to your health, it can be a nuisance for your home and appliances.

These minerals leave a residue behind as the water evaporates, and that’s what causes those unsightly stains on your glassware, silverware, faucets, and even in your shower.

What do hard water stains look like?

Hard water stains appear as white, chalky spots or cloudy films on surfaces that come into frequent contact with water. They are especially noticeable on clear glass surfaces and shiny metals, like your silverware, shower doors, or even your bathroom faucets.

The longer the stains are left untreated, the harder they are to remove. But even though they’re stubborn, they’re not invincible!

How to remove hard water stains

Removing hard water stains isn’t as hard as you might think, but it does require a bit of patience and elbow grease.

  • Vinegar Soak: Vinegar is one of the most effective and affordable ways to tackle hard water stains. For glassware and silverware, soak your items in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water for about 5-10 minutes. For faucets and showerheads, soak a cloth or paper towel in vinegar and wrap it around the stained area. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes. At the end of all, you’ll have to scrub with a soft brush or sponge then rinse and dry.
  • Baking Soda Paste: Baking soda is another great tool for cleaning hard water stains, especially on sinks, bathtubs, and stainless steel appliances. Mix baking soda with a little bit of water until it forms a thick paste, then apply the paste directly onto the stained area for 10-15 minutes. Scrub and rinse.
  • Lemon Juice: Lemon juice is a natural acidic cleaner that can help break down mineral deposits left by hard water. Simply ub a lemon wedge over the stained area, then rinse and wipe it dry with a clean cloth.

How to prevent hard water stains

An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. If you want to avoid this eyesore in the first place, then consider a water softener installation. These work by removing the minerals (calcium and magnesium) that cause hard water.
