We rely on them practically every moment of our modern lives, but batteries don’t always get the attention they deserve. Why you need a backup battery for your sump pump

Before we get into the specifics of choosing the right battery, let’s quickly talk about why you need one.

Most sump pumps run on electricity, which works perfectly fine until the power goes out. Unfortunately, heavy rains that cause basement flooding often come with thunderstorms, which can lead to blackouts.

A battery backup acts as a safety net. When the electricity cuts out, the backup kicks in and powers your sump pump long enough to keep things under control until the power returns.

Types of battery backups for sump pumps

There are a couple of different types of batteries that can power a sump pump backup system. Each has its pros and cons, and the best option for you will depend on your needs and preferences. Let’s break down the two main types:

  • Lead-Acid Batteries (Flooded Cell Batteries): These traditional type of battery backup used in many sump pump systems are generally more affordable and can be reliable for several years if properly maintained. Though widely available and cost-effective, flooded cell batteries require occasional maintenance and have a short lifespan of between 3-5 years.
  • Maintenance-Free AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) Batteries: If you prefer a battery that’s easier to care for, an AGM battery might be more your speed. These batteries are “maintenance-free,” which means you won’t need to add water or check the battery fluid levels. As you might suspect, these are more expensive.

Factors when choosing a battery backup

Now that you have a general idea of the types of batteries available, let’s look at a few key factors to consider when choosing the right backup for your sump pump:

  • Battery Capacity: For most homeowners, a battery with a capacity between 40–80 Ah will suffice for a sump pump to run for several hours during a power outage.
  • Pump Compatibility: Some sump pumps are designed to work with specific types of backup systems, so double-check the manufacturer’s recommendations before making your purchase.
  • Recharge Time: AGM batteries generally recharge faster than lead-acid batteries, so if quick recharging is a priority, an AGM battery may be the better choice.
  • Backup System Features: Many systems now come with alarms that alert you when the backup kicks in, or when the battery needs maintenance or replacement. Others may have digital displays that show the battery’s charge level or status, and etcetera.
  • Installation and Maintenance: While AGM batteries require less maintenance than lead-acid ones, you should still ensure that the system is user-friendly and doesn’t require complicated upkeep.
